The New Twitter Links

Part of the advertising capabilities of Twitter would include the use of Twitter links in some of your tweets. Twitter links are basically URL links which would take you to another website at the tweeter’s discretion. May it be for advertising or for the plain use of introducing web content to others, twitter links are basically part of the diverse world of sharing in Twitter. It is good news that Twitter has taken new measures to adapt to the problem of character-consuming links.

From the current ‘twt.tl’ URL wrapping they offer, it will become a ‘t.co’ wrapping. A t.co wrapping simply trims down long URL links into a shorter, yet relevant link. The link will still take you to the same site, but the link is cut short in order to eliminate the inconvenience of character-consuming links. Some links could eat up as much as 100 characters despite the 140 character limit for every tweet.

For example, in finding a book in amazon.com, a very long link which includes the book title and a series of product or page id numbers can become as short as: http://amazon.com/booktitle. This is very convenient, making the link you post orderly and appealing to the eyes.

Thus, with the new t.co wrapping system, the link will only occupy at most 20 characters as determined by the wrapping. You no longer need to count the number of characters you put in for the link, making it more convenient for writing the content you would want to write.

Not only will the new wrapping shorten your long links, it will also protect your computer from malwares since it basically filters the link for anomalies. Spread of malware is becoming rampant as many users spread infected links today.

Twitter links will also be routed through the new Promoted Tweets platform. Promoted Tweets are tweet ads provided by the advertising partners of Twitter. If you put out links in your tweet, the system will learn what the link is about and post relevant tweet ads in your Twitter stream. Links are basically routed into the Promoted Tweets service, and the new t.co wrapping will be fed into the Promoted Tweets algorithm. That is how the new platform would work, in order to find revenues for advertising in Twitter.

Today, only a few accounts are under the t.co wrapping system, but the proponents aim to conceptualize it for the whole Twitter community in the next months. With this new system of linking, Twitter is becoming more convenient to fellow micro-bloggers. In the advent of the new wrapping system, the advertising capabilities of Twitter are developed as better approaches for Twitter links are duly held by the Twitter team.
